Burning fossil fuels, (oil, natural gas, and coal), for our energy needs is polluting our air, endangering our health, and threatening the ecosystems upon which our very lives depend.  In addition, US dependence on foreign oil is a threat to our economic and national security. Transitioning to a renewable energy economy is more than a good idea, it is a moral imperative.



Learn It

According to the Center for American Progress,  America spends more than $1 billion dollars a day on foreign oil, much of it profiting “dangerous or unstable” regimes.  In effect, our dollars are likely financing the very wars that are bleeding our economy. It is estimated that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have cost the U.S. taxpayers $3 to 4 trillion dollars, not to mention the devastating losses of human life.  Those figures don’t include the costs of burning fossil fuels that come in the form of air pollution and climate change.

Top Ten Energy Saving Tips

  1. Live close to work, school, and other amenities, so you can bike or walk to them.
  2. Have a home energy audit, and follow the recommendations, to increase your home’s energy efficiency.
  3. Eat less meat.  Choose pasture raised organic meats, especially beef
  4. Buy the most fuel- efficient (or electric) car, reduce trips, and carpool when possible.
  5. Replace your incandescent light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent bulbs (CFL’s) or LED bulbs.
  6. Seal up leaky homes.  Insulate well, caulk and weatherstrip around windows and doors.
  7. Replace appliances bought before 2003.  Choose Energy Star appliances.
  8. Choose renewable energy for your home if it’s available in your area.  Click here to find out.  If not, get your utility to offer renewable options.
  9. Replace your gas hot water heater with a solar hot water heater.
  10. Use electricity wisely.
